Dr. Wolfgang Kaufmann studied veterinary medicine at the Free University of Berlin, Germany, received his degree as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (PhD) in 1984, and his approval as Certified Specialist in Veterinary Pathology in 1985. In 1990, he was authorized for postgraduate education in veterinary pathology and in 1997 accepted as Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathology. Since 2011, Dr. Kaufmann is accepted as Fellow of the I.A.T.P.

In 1987, he joined the Department of Experimental Toxicology and Ecology of BASF SE in Ludwigshafen, Germany, as a toxicologic pathologist and gained experience in all kind of regulatory studies (short-term and long-term, chronic and carcinogenicity studies) for agrochemicals, nutraceuticals and chemicals. Studies on neurotoxicity and toxicologic neuropathology and, in particular, developmental neurotoxicity and neuropathology were specific scientific foci. In 2007, he was appointed head of pathology in BASF SE and in 2010 he joined Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, as Global Head and Director of Pathology and Reproductive Toxicology in the department of non-clinical safety. Since 2017, Dr. Kaufmann is working as independent consultant for toxicologic pathology.

He contributed as compiler to the WHO and INHAND nomenclature for rats and mice for the nervous system, the liver, and the integumentary system, and he is author or co-author of various papers and book contributions in the area of toxicology/ toxicologic pathology and developmental neurotoxicity/ neuropathology.
