Sylvie Benestad serves as a senior researcher at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, located in proximity to Oslo, where she has dedicated over 25 years to the study of prion diseases in animals. In her capacity as the head of the National Reference Laboratory for Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) in animals, as well as the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Reference Laboratory for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), she engages extensively in both diagnostic and research activities related to TSE. Her research primarily focuses on the characterization of prion strains, notably the Nor98 / atypical scrapie strain in sheep, and more recently, on the newly emerging Chronic Wasting Disease strains identified in Northern Europe.
