Lorenzo Ressel is a full Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Liverpool and Head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology. In his current role, he provides strategic academic leadership while actively contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and diagnostic services. He also leads the Veterinary Laboratory Services (VLS), managing a multidisciplinary team and overseeing a portfolio of diagnostic, immunohistochemical, image analysis and forensic pathology services. As a recognised European specialist in veterinary pathology, Professor Ressel has played a key role in establishing forensic veterinary pathology as a more recognised discipline being a founding member of the Certificate in Forensic Veterinary Pathology. He frequently appears as an expert witness in court and has trained veterinary professionals in forensic techniques. He co-authored the national guidelines for forensic veterinary PMEs in Italy, a Review on blunt Force Trauma in animals and has lectured widely across Europe. In 2021, he was awarded the ECVP Certificate in Forensic Veterinary Pathology (CFVP) and serves as Chair of the CFVP Steering Group, overseeing the certification process and standards. He introduced novel teaching strategies such as virtual histology, 3D pathology models, and gamified learning. Professor Ressel’s research spans veterinary oncology, regenerative medicine, and diagnostic innovation. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and several textbooks, including Normal Cell Morphology in Canine and Feline Cytology, which has been translated into multiple languages. He served on the editorial board of Veterinary Pathology and he is currently serving as Associate Editor for Digital pathology and AI in the same Journal. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous journals in pathology, oncology, and forensic science.
