Description

Laura Peña, DVM, PhD, earned her doctorate in 1989 with a doctoral thesis on experimental mammary cancer in rats. She is a Full Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). She is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) and has served as its President.

For the past 25 years, her main research focus has been on canine mammary neoplasms, with a particular interest in studies with clinical applications. She has published numerous international research papers on this topic, presented at international conferences, and supervised multiple doctoral theses. She is a co-author of the latest and most recent histopathological classifications of canine and feline mammary tumors (2011, 2019), their histopathological grading system (2013), and an international consensus on the standardization of immunohistochemistry applied to mammary tumors (2014).

In recent years, her research has focused on the characterization and understanding of canine inflammatory mammary cancer, also demonstrating the validity of the canine model for studying human disease.

She has served as Co-Chair of the Mammary Tumor Working Group within the OPWG consortium (Oncology-Pathology Working Group), part of the Veterinary Cancer Society/American College of Veterinary Pathologists, and is currently a Board Director of the International IBC (Inflammatory Breast Cancer) Consortium.
