Description

Laura Peña, DVM, PhD, veterinary pathologist, holds the position of Full Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the Veterinary Faculty of Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. For many years, she has been involved in various activities of the ECVP, serving as a member of the examination committee and president of the Council. Her doctoral thesis, focused on experimental mammary cancer in rats, showcasing her early interest and dedication to unraveling the intricacies of oncology. With over 25 years of experience, she has devoted her research to the study of canine mammary neoplasms, with a particular emphasis on clinical applications. Her significant contributions to the study of canine mammary neoplasms are evident through her extensive publication record, numerous international research papers, and presentations at prestigious scientific conferences. Moreover, she has provided guidance to numerous Doctoral Theses, nurturing the next generation of veterinary pathologists. Dr. Peña has played a crucial role in the field, co-authoring the most recent histopathological classifications of canine and feline mammary tumors in 2011 and 2019, as well as a histopathological grading system in 2013. Additionally, she led an international consensus on the standardization of immunohistochemistry applied to mammary tumors in 2014, demonstrating her commitment to diagnostic techniques. In recent years, Dr. Peña's research has primarily focused on canine inflammatory mammary cancer, providing vital insights into this aggressive form of cancer and validating the use of the canine model for studying this disease in women. She also serves as a Board Director for animal models of the International IBC (Inflammatory Breast Cancer) Consortium. Dr. Laura Peña's contributions to the field of Veterinary Pathology, her dedication to advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and mentoring future professionals are a reflection of her passion and commitment.
