Dr. Giuseppe Giglia is a board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologist and an EBVS® European Specialist in Veterinary Pathology. He graduated with full marks cum laude as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Perugia, Italy, where he also earned a Ph.D. in Health and Experimental Veterinary Sciences. His doctoral research was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences and the Dutch Wildlife Health Centre at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, focusing on the pathology of zoonotic neurotropic viruses. During his Ph.D., Dr. Giglia investigated the pathology of Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) infections in wild birds. He developed a strong interest in the pathology of wild and exotic animals, with a particular emphasis on neuropathological lesions associated with both infectious and non-infectious diseases.
Currently, Dr. Giglia serves as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Perugia, Italy. He supports the diagnostic activities of the university’s veterinary pathology service, and his research focuses on the systematic recording of diagnostic findings and causes of death in animals and the standardisation of pathology reporting practices.
A central theme of his current research is the evaluation of diagnostic confidence and uncertainty in veterinary pathology, an emerging and critical area within the discipline. Dr. Giglia explores the factors that influence the pathologist’s diagnostic confidence, the strategies to mitigate diagnostic uncertainty and assesses how best to communicate these elements within pathology reports. His research aims to foster clearer and more effective communication between pathologists and clinicians, especially in complex or ambiguous cases.
His work has a strong translational focus, bridging the gap between pathology and clinical practice while promoting transparency and rigor in diagnostic reporting. In addition to his research and diagnostic responsibilities, Dr. Giglia is an active contributor to the veterinary pathology community. He regularly participates in national and international congresses, professional training initiatives, and collaborative research projects.
He currently serves as a Councillor for the Residents Committee of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP), where he supports ECVP residents on matters relating to ECVP training programmes and examination preparation.
