Description

Professor Beard is Head of the School of Life Sciences and Professor of Viral Pathology at Keele University. Her area of research expertise is veterinary poxviruses including the capripoxviruses sheeppox virus, goatpox virus and lumpy skin disease virus.
Professor Beard was awarded her veterinary qualification from the University of Sydney and her PhD from the University of Edinburgh. For the past twenty years she has led research into the pathogenesis of poxviruses, including co-ordinating the H2020 multi-partner research and innovation action DEFEND. Most recently her team has studied lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a rapidly emerging pathogen of cattle. She has published work on the pathological and immunological changes that occur in response to infection of cattle with LSDV, and estimated the transmission parameters of lumpy skin disease virus by different insect vector species.
