I am a veterinary pathologist at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health in Germany, where I serve as Head of the Pathology Unit within the Department of Experimental Animal Facilities and Biorisk Management.
I studied veterinary medicine at Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany) and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Austria). My doctoral thesis at the FLI focused on the pathogenesis of influenza virus infections in avian and mammalian species. Subsequently, I worked at the FLI’s National Reference Laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, where I was engaged in vaccine development and transmission studies.
I later joined the Institute of Veterinary Pathology at Freie Universität Berlin, where I shifted my research focus to cellular senescence in age-associated diseases and developed a strong commitment to teaching veterinary students. During this time, I became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (2015) and national specialist in veterinary pathology (2016).
Following several years in industry at Merck Healthcare KGaA, I returned to the FLI, where my scientific career began. My current research focuses on the pathogenesis of emerging and re-emerging viral diseases of livestock. In parallel, I remain actively involved in veterinary education through my continued collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin.
