Johannes (Hans) Harleman studied veterinary medicine in Utrecht, the Netherlands and graduated cum laude in 1978. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Department of Veterinary Pathobiology in 1982. He worked as toxicologic pathologist in various positions in both pharma and chemical industries in Europe (Ciba-Geigy, Basel; Smith Kline and French, Welwyn; ASTA Medica/Degussa Bielefeld/Halle; Novartis, Basel; Merck, Darmstadt; Astra-Zeneca, Alderley Edge; Independent Consultant, Macclesfield; Fresenius-Kabi, Bad Homburg) and contributed to the successful registration of several NCE/NBEs and chemicals. He retired in 2019.
Hans is/was an active member of several professional societies and was president of the ESTP and IFSTP. He is an editorial board member of Toxicologic Pathology (1996-2002; 2019-). He contributed to more than 60 publications/book chapters in the field of toxicological pathology. He was/is a member of the INHAND female reproductive tract and hematopoietic system groups.
Hans has been a contributor in the training of veterinary pathologists at the Veterinary School of University of Hannover since 1993 (Aufbaustudium/PhD/residency). In 2004 he became Honorary Professor at this University.
